OMEGA-3

While diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle are the primary keys to TRUE WELLNESS, it is often difficult to get everything our bodies need. Quality supplementation in the correct quantity and format is often required.

Today in the spotlight is OMEGA-3s – They contain ‘essential’ fatty acids that are necessary for health - they cannot be produced within the human body but must be supplied from the diet.

Both omega-3 and omega-6 contain essential fatty acids (EFAs and DHAs). The body requires EFAs for proper brain and cell membrane maintenance, nerve development and health, mood, inflammation control, and hormonal balance. DHA makes up to one quarter of the human brain’s fatty acid stores, and has a particular affinity to the brain’s intelligence, memory, and attention span capacities.

It is important to maintain the correct balance of omega-3 to omega-6 as these two substances work together to promote health. The typical North American diet contain 11 to 30 times MORE omega-6 than omega-3, which may be a significant factor in the rising rate of inflammatory disorders.

Fish oils are an amazing source of omega-3s, along with plant-based sources such as flaxseed oil, ground flaxseed, walnuts, chia and hempseeds. Most of us don’t eat enough of these omega-3-rich foods to keep our omega-3/omega-6 ratios in proper balance. A high quality supplement many be essential and is something I take every day!
